Located in the gorgeous Finger Lake region of NY the Glenn Curtiss Museum is a hidden gem. I am ashamed to say I have lived 1 hour from here for over 40 years and never even was aware of this museum or the impact Glenn Curtiss had on Aviation history until 2013. If you are in the Finger Lakes region of NY you must make sure you head on over and visit this museum. At the time of this review it was only $8.75 admission per adult  so there is no reason to skip visiting here.

Glenn Curtiss was a pioneer in aviation and motorcycles in the early 1900’s. He set a world speed record on January 24, 1907 of 136 MPH on his Curtiss V-8 Motorcycle pictured at right. That was an amazing feat in 1907. The museum has a replica of this bike meticulously created to the exact specifications of the original by the museum along with tons of other items.

Make sure you watch the 15 minute video of the history of Glenn Curtiss at the museum. Also I would recommend Googling Glenn Curtiss and reading a bit of the history before visiting.

Though his motorcycle engineering was amazing his biggest contribution was aviation. Though the Wright Brothers generally received the most mention in history for their flight at Kitty Hawk Glenn Curtiss in my opinion deserves much more credit. The Museum is jammed packed with displays and information related to this history. When you look at the displays and think back to the early 1900’s when this was all taking place it is truly amazing. Imagine the excitement and thrill of testing a new aviation design and the adrenaline rush you must have got when it worked!

Once you get done at the museum head to Keuka Lake just a few minutes up the road and check out where much of this history took place. Enjoy the wonderful little village of Hammondsport and take a cruise up around the lake. It truly is an amazing area and a great place to spend the day.
